Dental Assisting Back Office Course Syllabus

 
  Unit - 01   Basic Anatomy & Charting
This unit consists of basic anatomy, basic charting and symbols, tooth numbering, surfaces of the teeth and basic structure of dental anatomy.
 
  Unit-02   Infection Control
This unit covers basic infection control techniques that include OSHA / Cal OSHA recommendations, barriers, pre and post clean up procedures and public relations.
 
  Unit-03   Coronal Polish (RDA Function)
Coronal polish is a technique used to polish the teeth after a patient has had their teeth cleaned. Once a student has completed this class they will receive the necessary paperwork needed to submit it to the State Board of Dental Examiners after you become a Registered Dental Assistant in the state of California. This is an RDA function.
 
  Unit-04   Temporary Crown Fabrication
This unit consists of learning how to size temporary preformed and custom
crowns on models.
 
 
 
  Unit-05   Radiation Safety
This unit consists of radiation safety 1, which includes, basic x-ray mounting plus techniques of x-ray positioning and processing.
 
  Unit-06   Radiation Safety
This unit is radiation safety II, which covers the principals of
bi-bisecting and paralleling techniques.
 
  Unit-07   Radiation Safety
The third week of x-rays will cover patients x-rays techniques on positioning, mounting of the x-rays and processing. Students will be taking their exam and scheduling four patients to take x-rays on to complete course requirements.
 
  Unit-08   Basic Dental Instruments Aspiration Techniques and
Passing Instruments

This unit covers the techniques of passing and receiving dental instruments to the doctor and proper positions for aspiration.
 
  Unit-09   Temporary Fills - Perio Pak - Tofflemier Retainer
Bases & Liners- Rubber Dam

This unit concentrates on temporary fillings, bases and liners. The unit consists of manipulation and placement of temporary restorative materials and placement of medication in the cavity preparation. Rubber dam, Perio pack and Tofflemier retainers are also covered in this unit. Students will learn manipulation of dental materials, mixing, and proper placement of all three of these procedures. This unit prepares the student for future RDA functions.
 
  Unit-10   CPR & Vital Signs
The student will complete the required basic life support class for the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation card. The student will also be trained to do temperatures, pulses, respirations and blood pressures.
Upon satisfactory completion of this unit, the student will receive their CPR card.
 
  Unit-11   Ultrasonic Scaling (RDA Function)
Students will be taught the proper technique for Ultrasonic Scaling orthodontic cement removal only. This is an RDA function and paperwork must be submitted to the State Board of Dental Examiners once you become an RDA in the state of California.
 
  Unit-12  

Lab Procedures - Alginate Impressions - Plaster Pour
Bleaching Trays - Model Trimming

Students will be taught how to take alginate impressions on patients. They will then learn how to pour up the impressions that will duplicate the patient's teeth. From these impressions students will learn how to make bleaching trays for patients to whiten their teeth.
Students will also learn to pour and trim plaster models.
